Sharepoint 2013 (standalone) – configuration failure -failed to create sample data

While installing SP2013 in standalone mode with

 psconfig.exe -cmd Configdb create SkipRegisterAsDistributedCacheHost

got error at 8th step of create sample data

System.ArgumentException: The SDDL string contains an invalid sid or a sid that cannot be translated.
Parameter name: sddlForm
at System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor.BinaryFormFromSddlForm(String sddlForm)
at System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor..ctor(String sddlForm)
at Microsoft.SharePoint.Win32.SPNetApi32.CreateShareSecurityDescriptor(String[] readNames, String[] changeNames, String[] fullControlNames, String& sddl)
at Microsoft.SharePoint.Win32.SPNetApi32.CreateFileShare(String name, String description, String path)
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.AnalyticsAdministration.CreateAnalyticsUNCShare(String dirParentLocation, String shareName)
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.AnalyticsAdministration.ProvisionAnalyticsShare(SearchServiceApplication serviceApplication)

though Central admin and web application was working fine but after going service applications list I saw there were issues specially Search service application status was showing – Error

Now if you just read through the error while configuration

Microsoft.SharePoint.Win32.SPNetApi32.CreateFileShare(String name, String description, String path)
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.AnalyticsAdministration.CreateAnalyticsUNCShare(String dirParentLocation, String shareName)

It looks like the error occurred while trying to create analytics UNCShare. So I tried going to

“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Data\Office Server\”

there I found one folder “Analytics_”+ guid. So i tried doing the same i.e. share the folder . Gave permissions to Everyone (do this at your own risk :) my best guess is WSS_Admin_WPG and the account which is running the search service should do but then I didn’t bother trying added those and I gave permission to Everyone :)

After this when I ran the configuration again – no more error – setup was successful.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks to SchmittDotNet for sharing –
For SharePoint Foundation 2013 RTM, the folder to share is C:\Program Files\Windows SharePoint Services\15.0\Data\Analytics_

  • John

This guy deserves a tip! Why does MS release an installer that just doesn’t work on a fresh machine? How hard is it to test that :P Thx!

I do not have an Analytics folder at C:Program FilesWindows SharePoint Services15.0Data . I’ve been trying to troubleshoot this for a couple of days now. So frustrated.

    • tony

That directory isn’t creating for me either and the wizard won’t complete. Ugh. Very frustrated as well.

    • pepe

Try to give everyone full access to the parent folder in orden to check.

    • Ray Edwards

Did you ever get your problem resolved. The same issue is happening to me and none of these “fixes” work.

  • Brad Street

Fixed by right clicking the Analytics_[guid] folder, sharing with default share name, and giving wss_admin_wpg account full control.

  • deafwing

don’t think I have the same issue as you … i’m getting a nullrefexception error here –
An exception of type System.NullReferenceException was thrown. Additional exception information: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
    at Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.TaskThread.ExecuteTask()

  • Steve Clements

I have this exact issue, the problem is I can set permission on the Analytics folder. But when I re-run the Create Search Service script it creates a new folder (running from powershell).

    • Tom Castiglia

Steve – I have this same issue on SP2016 preview. I was re-creating the Search Service App using the farm configuration wizard and through the Service Applications feature in Central Admin. Point is fixing permissions in the existing Analytics folder doesn’t help, since a new folder gets created. Did you ever get this resolved?

  • Dharmendra chaudhary

    it working for me. thanks.
